Introduction to Ford keys

Early Ford car keys use a red chip system. The transponder chip itself is actually made from clear glass and concealed in the head of the key. These keys are identifiable by a small red square on the top right corner of the key, hence the name! You may have also seen a key with a completely red head. This is the master key used in the earlier three key red systems.

Later models use a similar glass transponder blue chip system, again identifiable by a blue corner on the key.

The very latest keys still have a blue corner but contain a black carbon chip which is more advanced.

We are able to program new Ford keys even without the red master key.

Ford key programming

All keys are cut and programmed at your vehicle. The car is actually programmed to the key rather than the key to the car. Main dealers will tell you they have to code three keys to your vehicle, but we can program just one if you require to keep the costs down as low as possible.

Types of Ford key

Ford utilise 3 main types of key. These are:

– The most commonly know Ford Tibbe key

– HU101 Laser key

– HU66 Laser key

The key type differs depending on the model and year of the Ford.

Ford Tibbe key

Earlier models of Ford operate with a Ford Tibbe key. The Tibbe key has a cylindrical shaped blade with 6 notches in the tip. The notches are cut into 4 varied depths which are unique to the vehicle and operate the lock. The key will either be “standard manual key” or a “remote locking key”. The remote will most commonly have three buttons. On some very early models a two button infrared remote was used. From 2007 the Ford Transit utilises a blue remote key, which looks similar to the older style black remote but can no longer be manually programmed.

Ford HU101 laser key

Newer Fords operate with HU101 blade profile key which is referred to as a “laser key”. The metal blade is flat and rectangualr with a unique shape groove cut down each side. Again the key provided with the car will either be manual or remote locking.
